How many Japanese restaurants are there in the U.S.?

As of January 2026, there are 21,825 Japanese restaurants in the U.S., distributed across major metro areas and coastal states. The largest concentrations are found in populous states such as California, New York, Texas, and Florida.

Where are Japanese restaurants located in the U.S.?

Overall, Japanese restaurants in the U.S. are concentrated in densely populated, economically active, and internationally connected markets. Key concentration areas include Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Seattle on the West Coast; New York and New Jersey on the East Coast; and Texas and Florida in the South.

Japanese restaurants are also relatively concentrated in states with larger Asian populations, including Hawaii, Washington, and Massachusetts.

By contrast, states in the Midwest and South Central regions, such as Kansas, Arkansas, Mississippi, and Missouri, have a much lower density of Japanese restaurants, with overall counts well below those of coastal markets.

Top 5 U.S. States by Japanese Restaurant Count

  1. California (CA) accounts for 20.31% of all Japanese restaurants in the U.S., with 4,433 locations.
  2. New York (NY) accounts for 8.51% of all Japanese restaurants in the U.S., with 1,858 locations.
  3. Texas (TX) accounts for 7.28% of all Japanese restaurants in the U.S., with 1,589 locations.
  4. Florida (FL) accounts for 7.00% of all Japanese restaurants in the U.S., with 1,527 locations.
  5. Washington (WA) accounts for 3.69% of all Japanese restaurants in the U.S., with 806 locations.

Together, these five states account for 46.79% of all Japanese restaurants in the U.S., nearly half of the national total.

This highly concentrated distribution reflects the strong relationship between population size, international connectivity, Asian population share, and consumer demand for Japanese food. It also suggests that Japanese dining categories such as sushi and ramen have a stronger market base in coastal states and major metropolitan areas.
